Lake Huron Facts

Surface Area

Lake Huron is the fifth largest freshwater lake in the world based on surface area. Lake Huron covers 23,000 square miles. It is 206 miles long and 183 miles wide. Including the shoreline of its 30,000 islands, Lake Huron's shoreline is the longest of the Great Lakes and measures 3,827 miles long.

Volume

Another way to measure lake size is volume. Lake Huron has the fifth largest volume of any freshwater lake. Lake Huron contains about 850 cubic miles of water.

Depth

Lake Huron has a maximum depth of 750 feet, with an average depth of 195 feet. Waves

Total Basin Drainage

Water flows through Lake Huron from both Lake Michigan and Lake Superior and drains into the St. Clare River to Lake Erie. The total basin drainage is 51,700 square miles. The retention/replacement time for water contained in the Lake Huron basin is 22 years.

Point of Interest

Lake Huron is home of the largest freshwater island, the Manitoulin Island.
