Understanding, Living With and Controlling Shoreline Erosion
A Guide Book for Shoreline Property Owners

Over the years, it has become clear that shoreline erosion is one of the biggest water resource issues in Northern Michigan, and one of the greatest concerns of shoreline property owners. To address these concerns, this guidebook was initially developed in 1995 with help from a grant from the Great Lakes Commission. Currently in its third edition, the guidebook is developed from a Northern Michigan perspective, although it is applicable to inland lake and stream situations throughout the Great Lakes Basin. The book provides information on understanding the impacts of shoreline erosion, selecting methods for preventing erosion, and eight basic steps to plan and implement a project.

The initial book was written by Douglas Fuller, former Water Resource Program Director for the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council. It was most recently updated by Watershed Council staff in 2006.

You can obtain a copy of Understanding, Living With and Controlling Shoreline Erosion for $15 by contacting the Watershed Council at 231-347-1181.
