Native Plant Rescue Program

Does the site of your proposed construction project contain wildflowers or young specimens of native trees and shrubs?

Would you like to see them saved and utilized elsewhere?

Native species, those found growing here before the arrival of Europeans, evolved over thousand of years to be important components of the ecological community. unfortunately, many native species have diminished due to habitat destruction or competition from invasive non-native species.

Native plants characteristics:

  • hardy and require little maintenance
  • provide more benefits to wildlife than exotic species
  • are quite beautiful!

A project to rescue desirable native species that would otherwise be doomed by inevitable construction has started in Northern Michigan. The project is a collaboration between Northern Michigan Master Gardener Association, Michigan State University Extension Emmet County, and Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council.

Plants are collected by volunteers by appointment and within a specified area arranged by you. Collecting should only take an hour or two. The plants will be used for community and environmental restoration projects or your own landscaping needs.

If you have questions or would like more information about this project, please contact Jill Kimble, jillk@watershedcouncil.org, (Link her email to email), 231.347.1181 ext. 100
