PUBLIC FORUM: BAY HARBOR GOLF COURSE AND EAST PARK

DRINKING WATER QUALITY

1. Where are the drinking water wells for the City of Petoskey located in relation to the cement kiln dust piles? Has any testing been conducted and if so, how often are they tested? Where can the public view the test results?
Response from DEQ: The municipal wells located in the Bay Harbor vicinity are: Petoskey Municipal Well #4 (Preserve well), Petoskey Municipal Well #5 (Camp Daggett well), Petoskey Municipal Well #3 (Townsend Road well). Each of the wells has been in operation for 10 years, each is over 400 feet in depth, and each has been tested for 10 years. The current testing frequencies under the Safe Drinking Water Act provisions are every 36 months for arsenic and every 108 months for a full sweep of trace metals. Additionally, the City checks for arsenic quarterly in these wells although they are not obligated to do so. To date, the wells have never exceeded any safe drinking water maximum contaminant level since testing began over 10 years ago.

The DEQ Cadillac District Office (231-775-3960) has all results on file. Contact the Water Bureau drinking water staff to view or obtain copies of the results. The DEQ Gaylord Field Office (989-731-4920) has the 2005 results only. Contact the Remediation and Redevelopment Division staff to view or obtain copies of the results, or you can go to the city of Petoskey website (http://www.cityofpetoskeyservices.com) to view the results on line.

2. Has any study or analysis been done relative to the last 80 years and the possibility that the regional water table which supplies drinking water to all in the areas has been contaminated anyway?
Response from DEQ: There is no indication of contaminated drinking water supplies in the region or near Bay Harbor from the CKD piles. A wealth of test results exists for community drinking water wells, as well as monitor wells, that clearly demonstrate excellent groundwater quality and that groundwater beneath the CKD piles moves north to Lake Michigan.

3. Why does Petoskey water come from Bay Harbor and is that why it is so bad?
