EMMET COUNTY ISSUES

Phragmites on the Lake Michigan Shoreline:
The Little Traverse Bay Watershed Management Plan Advisory Committee took on the task of controlling invasive Phragmites along Lake Michigan in Emmet County. During the spring meeting of this committee, we expanded our reach beyond Little Traverse Bay. We organized local stakeholders and governments to discuss how to fully take advantage of available grant money and put steps in place to battle invasive Phragmites in the future. The consensus was for Emmet County to take the lead, so the Watershed Council worked closely with the County to design a plan to proceed. In addition to identifying stands of Phragmites for treatment, we also coordinated the permit application. Committee Member Emmet County Lakeshore Association (ECLA) stepped up and volunteered to help us get permission slips turned in from property owners to treat this fall. Permission was needed from 223 individual or group property owners, and of those, ONLY 16 DENIED PERMISSION! This is a great success and we truly appreciate the hard work of our project partners, Emmet County and ECLA. We also thank DNRE for the opportunity to use grant funds on this effort this year. Recreation Plan Update Completed: In the past few years, we have noted the progress made by Emmet County Office of Planning, Zoning, & Construction Resources on a new Recreation Plan for the County and interested townships. After community forums, numerous meetings, and a lot of hard work, the draft plan was finalized and adopted by the Emmet County Board of Commissioners on December 10, 2009. The final version of the plan can be found on this website. If you have any questions, you can email Nancy Salar, Assistant Planner at nsalar@emmetcounty.org or call her at 231-439-8996. She is always looking for input from the community.

Bay Harbor:
Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council has been actively involved in the cleanup efforts at Bay Harbor and East Park since the contamination came to light in 2004. The contamination and cleanup is highly complex and intricate and has no easy solution. While the involved parties have collected and analyzed significant amounts of data in an attempt to fully understand the situation, additional data is needed in order to come up with the best long-term viable solution.
